A March 2015 DWI charge led to an investigation that has prompted two grand jury inquiries – and cost a Jersey City Councilman his job and his seat. Councilman Khemraj “Chico” Ramchal, who was first elected in 2013, eventually reached a deal with prosecutors in the case and in May pleaded guilty to assault by auto and theft by deception.
The second charge relates to a no-show job Ramchal held with the Hudson County Improvement Authority, which terminated his employment last June. Ramchal has also agreed to plead guilty to DWI charges when the case comes up in July. Under the terms of the agreement, Ramchal will avoid jail time, but he will face probation and is permanently barred from holding public or elective office in New Jersey.
